DIY Black and White Tummy Time Board

Did you know that babies love high contrast images; especially black and white?

Babies eyes are continuously developing and looking at high contrast colors helps them with their visual stimulation.

There are many free black and white baby cards you can find online, but I decided I wanted to take this idea and apply a more personal touch. As I have stated before, I am a transplant and my husband travels a lot. Because of this I have decided to make this adorable tummy time mat using black and white photos of my husband on one side and photos of some of Miles’ family members on the other.

Miles loves his tummy time board! He enjoys staring at the images and focusing on the faces of his father and family members.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to make a black and white tummy time board of your own!

Materials:

Black and white card stock

• Images of family members printed in black and white. (I used 4×6 vertical images for this board.)

• Scissors and paper trimmer

Double sided tape

White or black duct tape

• Optional – lamination materials.

Directions:

  1. Use your app of choice to convert your images to black and white. I use the Lightroom App from Adobe. They have a free version in the App Store.
  2. Cut the card stock in half. I used the 8.5 x 11″ size to make the cuts 8.25 x 5.5″.
  3. Adhere one photo on each side of the card stock. In my example there are eight pictures on each side.

  4. Optional: This is where I laminated the cards. You do not need to laminate them but it will help keep the board sturdy. You could also use contact paper. After I laminated the cards though I trimmed up the sides so that sharp pieces of plastic wouldn’t stick out.

  5. Line up the images in the order you want them and grab the duct tape.

  6. Place a strip of duct tape on the top and bottom of each image. Place duct tape on the one side of the first picture.

  7. Lay the two you are joining together next to each other and make a little hinge. Leave a little space between the two images to help with the fold. (See the image below for an example.) The hinge side will be the way the two photos will fold inward.

  8. Cover the hinge and the other side with a strip of duct tape. Cut in the middle of the duct tape (see below) to make the tape adhere easily without any folds.
  9. Now turn the set around and do the same thing with another image. This time the hinge will be on the opposite side to make it fold the other way. We are striving for an accordion style.

  10. Repeat until you have all your images connected.
  11. After all the images are connected, take your scissors and round off the corners to make them baby safe. Add a little more tape to the corners to help.
